Angelo Torres has long been one of the contributors to MAD Magazine over the years, often drawing parodies of television shows during the magazine’s most popular period. He also drew other things for MAD such as this fun piece of Star Wars' Chewbacca re-imagined as a homeless wookie. (This art was donated by Bradley Rader, known for his work on DC’s Catwoman comic a few years back.) According to the writing on the back of the art, this was published in 1997 in MAD #354 for a piece called Updating Star Wars for the Future. It was created in ink and ink wash on 8.5x11.5” Bristol board, and is signed by the artist. (Dig that crazy Star TREK symbol on Chewie's vest!)
Angelo Torres has been a force in comics for many decades. With a career that began in the 1950s, Torres worked on the famed EC Comics known for stories of horror, science fiction, and war topics. He drew for Atlas (later to become Marvel), and even worked on comic strips such as when he ghosted on Big Ben Bolt, John Cullen Murphy’s strip about a boxer. Just this year, Torres was honored at a dinner in New York by the National Cartoonists Society when they bestowed upon him the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award.
