Mo Willems

In 2015, the National Cartoonists Society created a Star Wars themed poster that was sold at their booth at the San Diego Comic Con. Many cartoonists from the NCS created their own take of George Lucas’ famous characters, often including their own characters that they are known for. We are happy to be offering several of the original drawings by our members from that print in our eBay auctions.

Created by children’s book author & illustrator Mo Willems, this stormtrooper looks strangely like Mo’s very popular pigeon character featured in many of his books beginning with the Caldecott winning Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. Taking off on that book title, Mo’s final piece for the NCS poster was inked and colored with a word balloon that said, “Let me drive the Death Star!!”

We are offering Mo’s pencil preliminary drawing for that NCS poster piece. Drawn in blue pencil on 9x12” parchment paper, the art includes the caption written at the bottom “Let me drive the Death Star!” just below Mo’s signature in red pencil. The top left corner includes Mo’s official stamp, and in the top right corner it is stamped “FINAL Jun 02 2015.” The art itself is about 7.5x7.5” in size, and would look great framed on your wall!

Along with winning two more Caldecotts for his children’s books, Willems also happens to be a multiple Emmy Award winner for his work on Sesame Street. He currently has been enjoying success with his newest series of children’s books featuring his characters Elephant and Piggie.
